About OpenRaven

OpenRaven is a free iOS app that translates spoken language in real time. The app shows a single screen with a central microphone control; tapping it transcribes your speech and produces an instant translation in the other language, which can then be read aloud. A camera button translates text from photos (menus, signs, documents), and a keyboard button translates typed or pasted text.

Supported languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, and Italian — any pair.

Pricing

OpenRaven is free to use, with a daily 30-minute microphone quota that automatically refills at midnight Japan Standard Time. The quota is a permanent free allowance, not a trial. There are no In-App Purchases, no subscriptions, no paid plans, and no advertising. Camera and typed-text translations do not consume the daily quota.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when my 30 minutes run out?
The microphone is temporarily disabled until midnight Japan Standard Time, when the quota refills automatically. The app continues to translate from camera input or typed text in the meantime. There is no purchase option, because there is nothing to buy.
Do I need an account?
No. OpenRaven does not have user accounts. You can start translating immediately after installing the app.
Does OpenRaven work offline?
Translation runs entirely on your device using Apple's built-in Translation framework, which is offline after the first one-time language model download. Voice transcription requires an internet connection because it uses a cloud speech-to-text service. Typed-text and camera translation also require an internet connection.
What languages does the first language download require?
The first time you use a new language pair, iOS will offer to download the translation model. Once downloaded, that language pair is available offline indefinitely.
How do I delete my data?
Because OpenRaven has no account, there is no data on a server to delete. To remove all local data — conversation history, daily quota counter, and language preferences — simply delete the app from your device.
Why does the app ask for the microphone and camera?
The microphone is required to capture your speech for transcription. The camera is used only when you choose to translate text from a photo. Neither is accessed at any other time.
Is my voice data stored?
Audio is streamed to the speech-to-text provider for transcription and is not stored or used to train models. Translations are produced on your device. Conversation history is stored only locally on the device and is removed when you delete the app.

Privacy

OpenRaven does not collect personal information, does not create user accounts, and does not show advertising. The only data sent off device is the audio stream for transcription and the text or image you choose to translate.
